As we are in the final stages of the summer break and preparing to welcome our new and returning students for the Fall 2023 semester, I am reaching out to 分享 administrative updates regarding the operation 和监督 of the 研究处. Following nearly a decade-long tenure, Vice 总统 for 研究 Morris Foster, Ph.D., is stepping down and returning to the classroom following a sabbatical leave.
In reflecting on his service, Dr. Foster said, “It has been an honor to lead bet8体育娱乐入口’s research enterprise. I am grateful to my dedicated colleagues, including our world-class researchers and research partners, who have made our recent advancements possible. I also appreciate the support of 总统 Hemphill and collaboration with campus stakeholders. I look forward to my continued work at the University.”
博士. 福斯特过渡, I am pleased to announce that Batten College of Engineering and 技术 Dean Ken Fridley, Ph.D., will also serve as the Interim Vice 总统 for 研究 for the 2023-2024 academic year. Dr. Fridley has extensive experience in academic and research administration. Prior to joining ODU a year ago, Dr. Fridley served as the Senior Associate Dean for 政府 at The University of Alabama’s College of Engineering for eight years. He also was the Interim Dean of the 荣誉学院 for one year and head of the Department of Civil, 建设, and Environmental Engineering for 12 years. In these roles and during his 20-year tenure at The University of Alabama, he built a culture of innovation, 创业, and readiness for change, in addition to his long-standing history of grant activity. 自从成为君主, he has been a visionary leader and active partner both inside and outside of his college.
From a scholarly and research perspective, Dr. Fridley is considered a leading expert in engineered wood construction, 表演, 减少危害. He has published 65 refereed journal papers and co-authored the leading wood engineering design textbook, “Design of Wood Structures.” Dr. Fridley has been responsible for more than $14.4 million in sponsored research, which is supported by a wide variety of federal, 状态, 以及行业来源. Much of his research has directly impacted the civil engineering profession, resulting in changes in national design specifications, 标准, 和代码.
In being selected for this interim position, Dr. Fridley 分享d, “I am thankful to 总统 Hemphill for entrusting me with this important role. I pledge to continue providing strong leadership to the Batten College of Engineering and 技术, while also engaging broadly and thoughtfully in all aspects of our research operation, 外展, 和监督.”

Professor and Eminent Scholar Gregory Cutter, Ph.D., in the 理学院’ Department of Ocean and Earth Sciences, will serve in the role of Interim Assistant Vice 总统 for 研究 Compliance as Adam Rubenstein, Ph.D., is no longer at the University.
